Sakar is one of the richest regions in Bulgaria in terms of endangered birds of prey populations. Sakar is widely known for the wines produced in the area, but tobacco growing remains one of the leading occupations.  This area is adorned with rock formations, exotic wildlife and dense forests. It has an abundance of wild herbs, mushrooms and fruit. Numerous streams rush through the villages making it an ideal area for picnics,  and fishing. This region is home for the endangered Imperial Eagle, terrestrial turtles and otters.

There are ancient Thracian settlements dating from the 5th Century BC and also early Christian 10th century rock churches.
The most imposing of the more modern churches is the Holy Virgin Cathedral in Topolovgrad which is not to be missed.

The Ustrem Holy Trinity Monastery is also not far away. It is set in a beautiful hilly area and you can picnic by the little stream (tables and benches) or eat at the monastery restaurant. There is even a small waterfall which seems to be a favourite area for electric blue dragonflies.
